In an effort to address the growing demand for professionals who can manage electronic medical records, many campus-based and online colleges are increasing their offerings in the health information technology (IT) field.

For example, an Oregon-based school recently announced that it will use $5.8 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to give students more educational offerings in this sector. Part of this financing will be used to provide financial aid to students who plan to enter a health IT-related position.

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology expects that approximately 50,000 individuals will be needed to fill technical jobs in the healthcare field over the next four years, which is why the government has allotted nearly $40 billion to improve education in this sector. As a result, individuals who wish to pursue these courses of study will have many options ranging from certificate programs to masters-level curricula.

Those who are interested in the field have a great deal of careers to choose from, including clinician, public health leader, health information management and exchange specialist, health information management and security specialist, research and development scientist, programmer, software engineer, or health information technology sub-specialist.
