Maryland's nursing shortage has prompted one college to expand its offerings.
The state's higher education commission recently approved a four-year bachelor's degree program that will be offered at one college's school of nursing. The new addition supplements the school's registered nurse (RN) to bachelor's of science in nursing (BSN) and RN to master's of science in nursing (MSN) courses that are offered through weekend and accelerated programs.
School alumni have praised the institution for stepping forward and offering a solution to setbacks in healthcare services. One former student said the nursing program, in addition to the school's pharmacy specialty, will produce a much-needed influx of qualified professionals.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that RNs earn an average wage of $62,450 per year. Employees holding a bachelor's or master's degree are more likely to be considered for career advancement and higher pay
According to the BLS, individuals who have a bachelor's degree in another field may consider enrolling in an accelerated program. Some online colleges offer fast-track degrees that also present the student with flexible class schedules.
