GOP Senators Want Less Cyber Security

Friday, Mar, 27, 2020 05:59PM

Despite ever-growing rates of cyber crime, eight top Republican senators recently introduced a bill that opposes the push for more government involvement in cyber security. If passed, the legislation could change the role of those with a cyber crime degree or online cyber crime degree.

The Strengthening and Enhancing Cybersecurity by Using Research, Education, Information and Technology Act would require federal contractors to inform the government about cyber threats and allow for easier communication among regulators and corporations, Reuters reported. The measure includes very little new regulation, Senator John McCain said.

"We believe that ensuring our nation's cyber security is critical. We have a bill that would do plenty to meet current challenges," he said when introducing the bill.

The senators introduced the measure in response to the Cybersecurity Act, which they said they didn't have enough input about.

President Barack Obama has said cyber attacks are the biggest economic and national security threat the country faces. To prevent such attacks, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security works to secure the cyberspace and critical infrastructure. Obama said cyber security is key to promoting U.S. innovation and economic prosperity.
