Electrical Trades

FORTIS' Electrical Trades program is designed to prepare the students for a rewarding career as an entry-level electrician or as an electrical apprentice. Electricians bring power to homes, businesses and factories by installing conduit, wiring, fuses, circuit breakers and other components designed to channel electricity safely. Electricians use hand and power tools such as conduit benders, screwdrivers, pliers, wire-strippers, drills and saws. To test connections and to ensure the compatibility and safety of electrical components, they will use special electrical testing equipment such as ammeters, ohmmeters, and multi-test voltmeters. Electricians can focus on either construction or maintenance, but often do both. Students start the program with simple atom and basic magnetic theory, the basis for electricity and all electrical equipment. After learning the fundamentals, the students will be taught Electrical Circuit theory, Electrical instruments and Conductors, Alternating Current Theory, and about Transformers and Three Phase Power. A portion of the program will also be devoted towards AC motors, Direct Current generators and motors. Students will be taught to read and utilize electrical schematics and blueprints. Lessons will be taught throughout the course via theory and hands-on demonstrations in lab class instructions. Throughout the course of study, the student will be instructed on the importance of safe work habits in the electrical field, and OSHA standards for a safe electrical environment surrounding the workplace. The National Electrical Code (NEC), will be covered during the course if instruction, with great emphasis on code guidelines and the importance of following them. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) and International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC) developmental standards for electrical equipment will also be studied within the curriculum.
